Unnecessary Tech Items for Athletes on a Budget

For college athletes juggling multiple priorities, technology can be a game-changer. Consider all of the things you do with your smartphone, laptop tablet: scheduling classes, staying on top of training and game schedules, tracking assignments, connecting with family and more. In many cases, the right tech enhances your experience and provides so many benefits in learning and your overall school experience. But, there are also many unnecessary tech items athletes don’t need, especially if they’re on a budget. It’s so important to figure out different types of essential and nonessential tech items you’ll require during your time at school.
As someone who has lived the DI athletics life and understands the importance of tech and communication- especially on road trips- I believe there are ways you can benefit from the right types of tech without paying top dollar. Here are a few tech gadgets that, while appealing, may not be the wisest investments for student-athletes looking to balance academics, athletics, and finances.

Unnecessary Tech Items for Athletes on a Budget

Gaming Systems: While gaming systems are undoubtedly entertaining, they can be a significant drain on both time and finances. For college athletes managing busy schedules, investing in a high-end gaming console may not align with academic and athletic priorities. Opt for budget-friendly entertainment options that won’t compromise your commitment to success. For example, a hand-held device (e.g. a Nintendo Switch Light) might be more affordable than a full gaming console. You can also make friends with gamers in your dorm and play as a guest for certain games.
Virtual Reality (VR) Headsets: VR technology has made remarkable strides, offering immersive experiences across various fields. However, for college athletes on a budget, VR headsets might be a luxury rather than a necessity. Think about it- with school, sports, travel, projects and a social life, do you really need to plug in to VR right now? Unless your academic or athletic pursuits specifically require VR technology, it may be wise to prioritize other investments and wait unit school is over to get your headset.
High-End Smartwatches: While smartwatches can be beneficial for tracking fitness and managing schedules, high-end models come with a hefty price tag. Consider budget-friendly alternatives that offer essential features without draining your wallet. The focus should be on functionality rather than extravagant brands and features.
Expensive Noise-Canceling Headphones: Noise-canceling headphones are excellent for creating a focused study environment. However, premium brands can be expensive. Opt for more budget-friendly options that still provide quality sound without sacrificing your budget constraints.
Smart Home Devices: While the allure of a smart home is undeniable, investing in expensive smart home devices might not be the most practical choice for a college athlete on a budget. Prioritize essentials like a reliable laptop or tablet over home automation gadgets that may not significantly contribute to your academic or athletic success.
While I might change my mind in the future, right now we do not have a smart home device in our home. Turning on our thermostat, lights, appliances and other features can be done when we’re at home. We pocket those dollars and invest them into other areas of our life.

Top-of-the-Line Fitness Trackers:
Fitness trackers can be valuable tools for monitoring health and wellness, but high-end models often come with a high price tag. Look for more affordable fitness trackers that still provide essential features to help you maintain your athletic performance without breaking the bank.
Tablets with Excessive Features: Tablets can be a versatile tool for college students, especially when you don’t want to carry a heavier lap top on the road. But purchasing a high-end model with excessive features may not be necessary. Opt for a budget-friendly tablet that meets your academic needs without unnecessary bells and whistles. This way you’ll get the best of both worlds- light tech that serves your needs at school or while you’re away from campus without having to come out of pocket.
The latest phone. I remember when the first iPone was announced. Innovative in nature and it changed the game in how we could communicate and access information. Since it’s launched, there have been so many different versions of smartphones that have come and gone. While having the latest version of a phone is really nice, you actually don’t need it.
Many smartphone upgrades come with slightly more storage and a few new features. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t use your current phone. Being able to make calls, download apps, access the internet, and your social profiles can be done extremely well on a phone that’s 2-3 years old. Consider upgrading your phone every few years instead of every year.
Multiple Tech Accessories: While accessories can enhance your tech experience, accumulating unnecessary items like fancy phone cases, charging docks, or styluses can add up. Prioritize essential accessories that serve a clear purpose and avoid accumulating items solely for aesthetic reasons.
I know a few people who ‘need’ to have all of the bells and whistles in addition to fancy tech: cases, screen protectors, stands, the works. I consider these items ‘nice to haves’ instead of ‘must haves’
Finally, if you’re looking for quality tech but don’t know where to start, there are plenty of websites and videos out there that can help you determine the type of tech that best suits your needs. Websites like engadget can help you review and compare multiple products, price points and other features to help you make a decision before you buy. Doing your due diligence when it comes to computers, phones, and other gadgets can help you save time and money.
College athletes juggling academic and athletic responsibilities must make informed decisions when it comes to tech purchases. Unnecessary gadgets like gaming systems, VR headsets, and high-end smartwatches can strain both time and finances. By prioritizing essential tech items that align with academic and athletic goals, student-athletes can optimize their budget and create a more focused, successful college experience. Remember, practicality and functionality should guide your tech investments to ensure a well-balanced and financially responsible approach to college life. You’ll have time to purchase all of the tech your heart desires later in life.
