Overwhelmed? Hit Pause and Find Some Fun

Feeling overwhelmed or stressed out has become a common experience for many of us- myself included! Sometimes the demands of work, family, social obligations, and more can be a lot to manage. Amidst this chaos, the simple act of stepping back and engaging in an activity you love can serve as a powerful antidote to stress. I felt that way recently- I was getting so stressed out overseeing my home, family tasks, my full-time job, and my growing business with upcoming travel planned.

While it might feel counterintuitive, this past weekend I decided to stop all of my planning, take a break and enjoy a task that brings me joy: cooking. While I didn’t get to my ‘to do’ list right away, I was able to mentally reset and get back to that same list with a new energy.  Here are a few benefits of taking a break and immersing yourself in something you enjoy when life feels overwhelming.

The Benefits of Enjoyable Activities

The Science Behind Stress and Relief.  When we’re stressed, our bodies respond with a “fight or flight” mechanism, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. While these hormones are beneficial in short bursts, chronic stress can lead to a myriad of health issues, including anxiety, depression, heart disease, and a weakened immune system. Therefore, managing stress is not just about feeling better emotionally but also about maintaining physical health.

The Power of Distraction. Engaging in an activity you love acts as a form of positive distraction. When you immerse yourself in a hobby or pastime, your mind temporarily shifts away from stressors. This mental break allows your brain to reset and reduces the intensity of negative thoughts and emotions. Whether it’s cooking, reading, or listening to music, these activities help divert your attention and provide a respite from the pressures of daily life. For me, making the time to cook a mini Sunday dinner helped distract me from my growing to-do list and gave me the energy to tackle more items later that night.

Boosting Mental Health and Well-being. Participating in enjoyable activities has been shown to increase levels of dopamine and endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. These neurotransmitters promote feelings of pleasure and satisfaction, counteracting the effects of stress hormones. Regular engagement in pleasurable activities can lead to improved mood, greater sense of accomplishment, and enhanced overall well-being.

Fostering Creativity and Problem-Solving Skills. Stepping back from stress and delving into a creative activity can also enhance your problem-solving abilities. When your mind is relaxed and engaged in something enjoyable, it enters a state of “flow,” where you lose track of time and become fully absorbed in the task at hand. This state of flow fosters creativity, allowing you to approach problems from new angles and come up with innovative solutions that you might not have considered in a stressed state.

Building Resilience and Coping Skills. Regularly taking time for activities you love can help build resilience against stress. It equips you with healthy coping mechanisms that you can rely on during tough times. Knowing that you have a reliable source of joy and relaxation can make it easier to handle life’s challenges. Over time, this practice can increase your capacity to bounce back from adversity and maintain a more balanced perspective.

Creating a Sense of Control. Honestly, the worst part of stress for me is the feeling of losing control By intentionally choosing to engage in an activity you enjoy, you regain a sense of control over your time and your emotions. This act of self-care reinforces the idea that you have the power to prioritize your well-being, even amidst demanding circumstances.

Strengthening Social Connections. Many hobbies and activities also offer opportunities for social interaction. Whether it’s joining a book club, a sports team, or a crafting group, these activities can help strengthen social bonds and provide a support network. Positive social interactions are crucial for mental health, offering companionship, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. Remember- you never have to go at it alone.

Making Time for What Matters. It’s easy to fall into the trap of believing that we don’t have time for hobbies and interests amidst our busy schedules. I feel like that sometimes with all of the tasks on my plate. However, making time for what you love is essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It might require some prioritization and time management, but the benefits far outweigh the effort. Scheduling regular breaks for enjoyable activities can make you more productive and focused when you return to your responsibilities.

When feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, stepping back and doing something you love is more than just a temporary escape—it’s a crucial investment in your mental, emotional, and physical health. The benefits of such a practice are manifold: from providing a mental reset and boosting mood to fostering creativity and building resilience. By making time for activities that bring you joy, you not only enhance your own well-being but also equip yourself with the tools to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and grace.
