A lot of college athletes tell me the same thing: “I want to grow my NIL and build my brand…but I’m not super social outside my team.”
And honestly? That’s normal. I remember being that DI athlete who had a very full schedule juggling class ➝ practice ➝ treatment ➝ study hall…. and networking was not part of that rotation. I’m not the type of person who becomes energized meeting dozens of new folks at an event, connecting with industry leaders at conferences, or attending a late-night happy hour. I know first-hand that when it’s time to network or reach out to brands, it can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re introverted.
But here’s the truth. You don’t need to be extroverted to build powerful connections- take it from me! I learned early in life that my introverted characteristics and personal ambition can coexist. You just need strategy, intention, and consistency. Here are a few ways introverted athletes can network on their terms.
How to Network When You’re Introverted and Ambitious
1. Start Online (Low Pressure, High Impact). Engage with local businesses, alumni, and NIL-focused communities on LinkedIn, IG, or TikTok. Leave a quick comment, share, or short DM builds visibility without draining your energy.
2. Tap Into Your Built-In Network. Your campus is full of people who already want you to succeed: coaches, advisors, trainers, SIDs, alumni groups. Have small conversations that can lead to big opportunities.
3. Let Your Content Network for You. Your posts (no matter how simple) work 24/7. Share routines, recovery insights, life as a student-athlete, lessons learned, or small businesses you genuinely love.
Authenticity attracts the right people.
4. Use “Micro Networking”. When you’re starting out and are a little shy, there’s no need for big events or forced social energy. Instead, try:
- One new hello a week
- One new connection request
- 10 minutes of engagement twice a week
- One thank-you message after a collab or share
Small interactions can turn into strong relationships.
6. Protect Your Energy and Your Schedule. Networking should fit around your priorities (school, sport, recovery). Set light, realistic habits such as:
- Mornings: respond to messages
- Midweek: reach out to one new person
- Weekends/off-days: plan content or attend 1 event a month
7. Finally, Lean Into Your Strengths. Introverts often listen deeply, communicate thoughtfully and build genuine connections. Tap into these strengths and follow through. Brands notice this and value it.
Being introverted doesn’t limit your NIL potential or your brand. It just means you network differently – and often more meaningfully. Play to your strengths and your network will grow in a way that feels sustainable and strategic.
