Choosing a college as a student-athlete isn’t just about the team, facilities, or coaching staff—it’s also about finding the right academic, financial, and personal fit. Many athletes focus on athletic-related questions, which make sense, but there are also so many non-athletic factors that can make or break your college experience. During my time, everything from the type of meal plan I had access to on campus, the study hall support offered, to even ‘down time’ (which is hard to find at the Division I level) are all things I considered before signing with a program. Below are 12 overlooked questions every athlete should ask on a college visit to ensure they’re making the best long-term decision.
12 Questions Every Athlete Should Ask During a Visit
1. Will my scholarship be guaranteed for four years, regardless of playing performance? Some athletic scholarships are renewable yearly, meaning they can be reduced or taken away based on performance or coaching changes. Make sure you know if your scholarship is guaranteed and what conditions might affect it.
2. Do you have my major, and will my athletic schedule allow me to pursue it? Some schools discourage athletes from choosing majors with heavy course loads, labs, or internships. If you have a specific academic goal, make sure you can realistically complete it while balancing your sport.
3. What isn’t covered by my scholarship? As I’ve shared before, a full ride doesn’t always cover everything—consider books, off-campus housing, summer courses, and travel costs. Ask for a breakdown of what’s included and what additional costs you might have to cover.
4. How many athletes play my position, and when will they graduate? Understanding the depth chart can give you insight into your playing time and competition. If your position is stacked with upperclassmen, you might have to wait longer to see the field.
5. What academic support is available for athletes? Between games, travel, and practice, keeping up with coursework can be tough. Ask about tutors, study halls, priority registration, and flexibility with professors.
6. What happens if I get injured and can’t play anymore? An injury can change everything. Find out if the school will honor your scholarship if you medically retire and what kind of rehabilitation, medical care, and insurance coverage you’ll receive.
7. What are the housing options for athletes? Do freshman athletes live in designated dorms? Are off-campus apartments an option? What happens after your first year? Knowing your housing situation can help you plan financially and socially.
8. What are my meal plan options, and do they fit my dietary needs? Some schools provide athlete-specific meal plans, while others require you to use the general dining hall. Make sure the meal plan supports your nutrition needs and covers enough meals during the season.
9. How does the athletic department help athletes with career planning after sports? Only a small percentage of college athletes turn pro. Does the school offer career development, networking opportunities, or alumni connections for athletes? Ask about internship opportunities and job placement support.
10. What mental health resources are available for athletes? The demands of being a student-athlete can be overwhelming. Does the school offer sports psychologists, counselors, or mental health support for athletes?
11. How does the school support athletes who want to make NIL money? Ask if the school provides NIL education, brand-building support, or connections to sponsorship opportunities.
12. What’s the typical daily schedule like for my sport? Some programs have early morning practices, mandatory film sessions, or travel-heavy schedules that can impact your lifestyle. Make sure the routine aligns with what you can handle.
Your college choice is about more than just athletics—it’s about your education, finances, and future opportunities. Asking these overlooked questions will help you choose a school that supports your goals on and off the field.
